Dr. Ryan Valdez
Ryan Valdez is the Senior Director of Conservation Science at the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA), where he integrates multidisciplinary science into national and regional advocacy efforts to protect more than 430 U.S. national park units. He emphasizes collaboration, strong vision, and effective communication, serving as a convener across departments and regions to elevate the role of science in park protection.
Ryan’s background centers on biodiversity and landscape conservation, with expertise in mapping, data visualization, and applied conservation science. He has managed conservation projects across the Americas and East Africa, conducted extensive fieldwork with endangered species, and is a Certified Wildlife Biologist®. Previously, he spent many years at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, where he directed the Amazon GIS Program in partnership with all eight Amazon basin nations through the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization.
In addition to his professional work, Ryan has taught conservation courses at George Mason University, founded the Kenya Study Abroad Program, and remains deeply committed to STEM mentoring and supporting the next generation of conservation practitioners.
